Well, the answer to this question might depend on how old you are and what generation you were born into. Alternatively, the answer from a therapeutic point of view (at least this therapist) is it depends on what you are communicating about.
For example, in my practice, I am amazed by the number of couples that argue and deal with problems via text. This is a very dangerous shift in our society. It allows individuals to express themselves more freely than in person, it eliminates the nonverbal messages that are essential for open, honest communication, enables greater miscommunication and impedes listening. Similarly, parenting via text allows teenagers, in particular, to be more confrontational, challenge rules and disregard what is being said. In other words, intent of message often does not equal what is received (how convenient for not following the rules as a teenager).
